Black Mondo Decorative Grass Plants Bareroot, you chose amount!

Black Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’) is a striking ornamental grass that adds a touch of elegance to any garden or landscape. Unlike traditional grasses, Black Mondo Grass features dark, almost black, foliage that creates a dramatic contrast against other plants. It forms dense clumps of arching, strap-like leaves that grow up to 8-12 inches in height. In summer, small spikes of pinkish-white or lavender flowers emerge, adding an additional layer of beauty to the plant. However, it’s primarily grown for its stunning black foliage, which retains its color throughout the growing season.

Planting Zone Information: Black Mondo Grass is hardy in USDA plant hardiness zones 6 to 11. It thrives in temperate and subtropical regions, making it suitable for a wide range of climates. It’s important to ensure that your planting zone is within this range to provide the necessary conditions for successful growth.

Growing Guide Instructions for Black Mondo Grass Bareroot:

  1. Choosing the Right Location:
    • Black Mondo Grass prefers partial to full shade. Select a location in your garden that receives dappled sunlight or filtered shade.
    • Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent waterlogging, as excess moisture can be detrimental to the plant’s health.
  2. Preparing the Soil:
    • Before planting, prepare the soil by removing any weeds, rocks, or debris from the planting area.
    • Loosen the soil to a depth of about 8-10 inches, incorporating organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil fertility and drainage.
  3. Planting the Bareroot:
    • Soak the bareroot in water for a few hours before planting to rehydrate the roots.
    • Dig a hole that is wide and deep enough to accommodate the root system of the plant.
    • Place the bareroot in the hole, ensuring the crown is level with or slightly above the soil surface.
    • Backfill the hole with soil, gently firming it around the roots to remove air pockets.
  4. Watering and Mulching:
    • Water the newly planted Black Mondo Grass thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots.
    • Maintain moist, but not soggy, soil during the establishment period. Water deeply once or twice a week, depending on the weather and soil conditions.
    • Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw, around the plant to conserve moisture and suppress weed growth.
  5. Care and Maintenance:
    • Remove any weeds that compete with the Black Mondo Grass for nutrients and water.
    • Avoid excessive fertilization, as it may lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of color intensity. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer sparingly in early spring if needed.
    • In colder regions, protect the plant during winter by applying a layer of mulch to insulate the roots.
    • Divide mature clumps every few years in spring or fall to rejuvenate the plant and promote healthy growth.

With proper care and maintenance, your Black Mondo Grass will thrive, adding a touch of elegance and drama to your garden or landscape.

Proud Products Guarantee!!

Plants from Daylily Nursery are guaranteed to arrive healthy and green. If you have any concerns or are dissatisfied within the first five days of receiving your plants, please email or call our office so that we can help make it right! Plants require proper care and nourishment to adapt to their new surroundings. Unfortunately, if your plants have received less-than-ideal care or were purchased for planting outside of your recommended growing zone, your purchase isn’t covered by our guarantee. Zone recommendations are provided in our listings.
Exercise caution and use your best judgment before ordering during unusually hot or cold weather (below 32 degrees F, or in excess of 95F for shipping purposes), as these extremes may leave your plant vulnerable to damage. The optimal time for planting for most of our material is in mid to late spring, past the danger of hard frost. This allows your plants the longest possible growing season. Summer and very early fall are also suitable, as long as your plant is placed in optimal conditions and receives adequate water during the hotter, dryer periods of the summer. Late fall and winter are very risky in most areas, as our plant material ships from cozy greenhouses and will struggle adapting to very cold or frozen soil, or abrupt changes in temperature. This can easily cause damage, stunting, or failure to thrive. When in doubt about suitable planting times or zone compatible plants for your area, reach out to your local Agricultural Extension Office.
If issues with your plants arise within the first 30 days of receipt, please email or call our office. Our knowledgeable staff will review your concerns and provide guidance and troubleshooting, or a one-time replacement if necessary. The customer assumes responsibility for the cost of shipping the replacement. Happy Planting!
