Hostas continue to be the mainstays of the shade garden and the backdrops for other smaller perennials. If given consistent even moisture, hostas can be planted in most soils in shade and will require little care thereafter. Hostas will grow into large clumps and can be easily divided and moved; plant in mass or borders for a bold effect. Aside from the varying color schemes of hosta leaves, most are green and will produce slender stalks of bell-shaped flowers by mid-summer. Both the leaves and flowers make decent cut flowers and can be used in mixed arrangements. Flowers also attract hummingbirds and other pollinators. ‘Paul Revere’ is a smaller hosta with bicolored leaves that are deep green along the edges and creamy white in the center. Pale lavender flowers emerge, towering above the mounded foliage by summer.

Growing guide:

light/watering
drought-tolerant once established these plants are at their best in evenly moist soil in partial shade, although a very few will tolerate full sun with sufficient water. Once established, hostas can handle drought and will compete successfully with tree roots in the north, but need regular watering in the south.

fertilizer/soil + pH/zone
Hostas thrive in average, even, and damp soils that are slightly acidic and will benefit from a light application of fertilizer in early spring. These low-maintenance plants can be ignored and they will still perform. However, to get the most out of them, provide deep rich soil with consistent watering along with occasional side dressing of compost or aged manure. An organic mulch is appreciated but keep it away from the crowns. Zone 3-9.

reflowering
Very few varieties will reflower; cut flower spikes off at theri base when blooming is over.

diving/transplanting
These forgiving plants are best divided in spring when the new leaves are still furled up, but both division and transplanting are successful throughout the season if attention is paid to through follow-up watering.

end-of-season-care:
Foliage should be cut back in the fall to eliminate cover for overwintering slugs but this can also be done in the spring.

Proud Products Guarantee!!

Plants from Daylily Nursery are guaranteed to arrive healthy and green. If you have any concerns or are dissatisfied within the first five days of receiving your plants, please email or call our office so that we can help make it right! Plants require proper care and nourishment to adapt to their new surroundings. Unfortunately, if your plants have received less-than-ideal care or were purchased for planting outside of your recommended growing zone, your purchase isn’t covered by our guarantee. Zone recommendations are provided in our listings.
Exercise caution and use your best judgment before ordering during unusually hot or cold weather (below 32 degrees F, or in excess of 95F for shipping purposes), as these extremes may leave your plant vulnerable to damage. The optimal time for planting for most of our material is in mid to late spring, past the danger of hard frost. This allows your plants the longest possible growing season. Summer and very early fall are also suitable, as long as your plant is placed in optimal conditions and receives adequate water during the hotter, dryer periods of the summer. Late fall and winter are very risky in most areas, as our plant material ships from cozy greenhouses and will struggle adapting to very cold or frozen soil, or abrupt changes in temperature. This can easily cause damage, stunting, or failure to thrive. When in doubt about suitable planting times or zone compatible plants for your area, reach out to your local Agricultural Extension Office.
If issues with your plants arise within the first 30 days of receipt, please email or call our office. Our knowledgeable staff will review your concerns and provide guidance and troubleshooting, or a one-time replacement if necessary. The customer assumes responsibility for the cost of shipping the replacement. Happy Planting!
